How are child support payments made in Australia


Child support is the financial support parents are supposed to make towards the maintenance of the child. This money is used to maintain the child and pay all the expenses towards raising the child till the child becomes 18 years. If you are a non resident parent and are making child support payments, you should know how to make child support payments.

Child support payments in international cases:

In case you are paying your child support the mode of payment will be decided if you reside in Australia or overseas. You will have to be very regular while you pay your child support amount in full. In case there is any delay, you need to contact the child support agency immediately to prevent ant problem.

In case you are residing in Australia, there are a number of modes to pay child support.

  1. Direct credit
  2. Employer deductions
  3. Bpay

You can pay the child support directly to the resident parent. There is no need to get the CSA involved in this. These types of payments of child support are called as Non Agency Payments or NAP. The child support payments can be directly credited as child support. You can direct the payment of your child support and see how the money is spent. This is a very good option as it gives flexibility to both the parents.

Types of Non Agency Payments:

  1. Non Agency Payments- in this type of child support payments, you can directly give cash to the other parent. This amount can be credited for other things and services. Both of you can agree for this type of payment of your child support amount.
    1. Prescribed Non Agency Payments- in this type the person paying the support amount does not need the permission of the other spouse to make payments. Evidence is required in this kind of payment if one of the parent involved does not agree for this type of payment. These payments can be used only for the benefit of the involved child. It includes:
    1. Medical and dental bills of the child
    2. Schooling expenditures
    3. Traveling expenditures
    4. Accommodation, etc

    The CSA should be informed immediately when the child support payment is made.
