Care of Children during Divorce

Divorce of parents is the worst nightmare for children. Their sensitive minds bear a deep impact of parent’s separation. Proper care of children during divorce is must in order to minimize its effects on their personality.

Children are vulnerable and the shock of their parent’s separation leaves them confused. Young children start blaming themselves for the separation of their parents. They do not understand the reason as to why their mother and father should stay apart from each other.

The situation is even more traumatic when the child is required to choose one of the parents with whom he will stay all his life. The child finds himself in a dilemma and hates to choose one parent over the other.

The fierce arguments between the couples, physical abuse, court room battles, dull and heavy atmosphere at home, leave the child battered. He longs for a healthy and happy family environment and becomes frustrated in the course of his parent’s divorce.

If the child is an infant he does not realize much about the happenings during divorce but research suggests that young kids are also affected by the estranged behavior of their parents.

If the adolescents and teenagers are not dealt properly during divorce they can choose wrong paths as they grow. Study suggests that children with divorced parents exhibit negative personality traits like aggression, anxiety, alienation, inferiority complex, and so on. A number of such children are school drop outs and delinquent.

To prevent the child from an unhealthy future the role of the parent should be to handle the children in a proper way while they are separating. While their relationship as a couple has come to an end they are still parents and responsible for the wellness of their child.

Here are a few tips for care of children during divorce:
  1. Realize you role as parents. While you have ended your relationship with your spouse, keep yourself connected to him or her as your child’s parent. During the divorce proceedings try to be together for the child whenever required, whether it’s some event in the child’s school, a birthday, or Christmas celebrations.
  2. Avoid offensive behavior in front of the child. Physical abuse, noisy arguments, and offensive language, results in a great shock for the child. He starts hating you for this and draws himself in a shell. So try and avoid any such behavior in front of your child.
  3. Sit together and explain the truth of separation to your child. If both mother and father convince the child that they are always there for him, the child will feel much better.
  4. Send your child to forums that offer moral and emotional boosting for children under trauma due to their parent’s divorce.
  5. During the course of your divorce do not neglect your child’s health and other physical needs. Parents generally stop paying attention to even the basic needs of their child as they are so tensed due to divorce. Take care to remember important vaccinations and other important things related to the child.

By taking a few simple steps and maintaining your calm and composure, you can take good care of children during divorce. Remember that they are your united responsibility and you should take care of them together.
