Protecting Children from Alienation

Parental Alienation is a dirty game played by some egoistic couples for vengeance. It badly affects the child and his personality. Protecting your child from alienation is an important step in child care during pre or post-divorce.

What happens in parental alienation?

Parental Alienation occurs when the child becomes alienated from one of the parents. This alienation is deliberately inspired by one of the parents against the other. Mostly during divorce one of the parents uses PA as a strategy to win custody battle. Post divorce alienation is done in order to distant the child form the non residential parent.

The parent who alienates the child used wrong means like lying about the behavior, character, intention, and conduct of the other parent. The child is brainwashed to believe that the other parent is not worth love and trust.

As a result of this instigation the child becomes totally alienated from the other parent, generally the nonresident one, and starts hating him badly.

If the child becomes a victim of parental alienation he starts behaving in a rude and rash manner with the parent. Some of the drastic behaviors that the child exhibits as a result of PA are:

  1. Denying to meet the other parent
  2. Arguing with the parent
  3. Speaking in an offensive manner with him
  4. Physically abusing the parent

The targeted parent has to take the brunt of his child’s rashness without any of his fault. Wrong allegations and brainwashing force the child to think that his parent is bad. This alienation results in a phenomenon known as PAS.

Experts suggest that PAS has lots of adverse effects on the child. To avoid this situation you must know how to protect your child from alienation.

For protecting children from alienation parents can careful in the following ways:

Watch signs of hatred and alienation

In case you get a feeler that your child’s behavior towards you is changing, you should be alarmed at once. Michael used to visit his son every month after the couple got divorced. For last one month the child was irregular and avoided meeting the father. Whenever they met the child used to be very quiet and withdrawn. It was quite late when Michael realized that the child was suffering from parental alienation. So do not rule out the chances of this syndrome if your child’s behavior is getting estranged towards you.

Do not over react

If your child behaves in a rash manner try to maintain your composure and do not react. You might be hurt but keep your cool. Analyze the reason behind his behavior and talk to your child in a very peaceful manner. Any wrong or aggressive behavior can reinforce the child’s wrong belief in you.

Seek help from family or friend

If you feel that your child is being alienated take the help of a close family or friend. Use them as a mediator to explain the child that he has been told wrong things. Chances are that the child will believe the other person more than you.

By keeping an eye for PA you can protect your children from alienation. Parental Alienation is a divorce casualty and should be avoided at any cost.
