The Child Support Agency

The Child Support Agency (CSA) is an arm of the Child Enforcement Commission in Great Britain. It plays an important role in regulating the child maintenance issues. Prior to CSA, child maintenance issues were dealt by the court.

When couples with children get divorced they still have to contribute financially for bringing up the child. The court makes it legally binding for the nonresident parent to pay a fixed sum of money on a regular basis that covers the child expenses.

There are three ways a couple can reach a conclusion on the child maintenance. They can enter a mutual agreement, opt for child maintenance benefits, or approach the Child Support Agency for calculating the right maintenance amount.

CSA is appointed by British Government in order to ensure that a fair amount is paid as maintenance regularly and till the time fixed by the court. Specialized agencies like CSA are very important for people who are getting divorced and want to fix child maintenance.

What all does CSA does?
  1. CSA helps in calculating the maintenance amount. The agency gathers information from both the parents and after applying other important formulas, the CSA recommends the exact amount of maintenance fit for the case. The agency keeps updating the system of calculation according to Government standard.
  2. Child Support Agency also helps in enforcing the child maintenance rules. If someone approaches the agency with compliant that the maintenance is not being paid regularly, or less amount is being paid, the CSA can take action against the person. Here are a few actions that CSA can take against a non-paying parent:
    • Get money deducted directly from their wages
    • Force the nonparent to sell his or her property
    • Confiscating the driving license or stopping them from getting a new one for another two years
    • Involve the court to claim the money they owe
    • Freezing money belonging to them
    • Send them to prison
    • Seize their belongings
By taking such actions CSA ensures that the non paying parent starts paying the child maintenance.
  3. CSA also does the job of tracing non paying parents and then advising them to pay child maintenance. In some cases the non residential parent stays away from the child from very beginning. If the residential parent seeks CSA’s support in getting maintenance then the agency first finds the required person and then assists getting child maintenance.
  4. Child Support Agency also helps in transfer of funds between the parents by arranging suitable methods of payments.
  5. In case a parent has been a defaulter by not paying maintenance on time, the CSA makes him pay the arrear
  6. The biggest role of CSA is to monitor that all couples, who approached CSA for maintenance issues are adhering to schedules and paying up on time.

If you are too confused and tensed regarding the child maintenance then frankly approach CSA. Child Support Agency is the most justifiable place to help both residential and non residential parents for giving and receiving maintenance money.
