Child support and visitation

Child support and visitation are two separate aspects. There is no connection between visitation and child support payments. For children related support and care both parents should be as responsible. Both parents play a pivotal role in the development of their child.

After divorce parents should handle the situation in a manner which would not have a negative effect on the child. Both the father and the mother of the child should work in a manner which would help the child.

Child Support-

Child support payments are paid by the non-custodial parent to the custodial parent for the upbringing of the child. Child support payments are made so that the child is taken care of in all the important aspects and so that the standard of living does not come under any drastic change. The payments are made to take care of all aspects ranging from clothing, medical help and school fees.

Child support and visitation-

1. Visitation rights are granted to the non-custodial parent and are awarded so that the parent has a chance to build a healthy relationship with the child. Visitation rights are granted so that the child can spend quality time with the non-custodial parent.
2. The payment of child support is calculated on the following grounds: income of the parents, basic living expenses, school fees, the number and the ages of the children in the house. Special consideration would be given for child support if the child has a serious illness or disability.
3. Though the parent maybe paying for child support the same would not entitle the parent to have visitation rights for the child but the failure to pay child support would bring an end to visitation rights.

Child support and visitation are not interlinked-

1. The duration the non-custodial parent spends with the child would not affect child support payments.
2. The amount of child support can only be increased or decreased if decided by the court. Expenses such as educational requirements and medical requirements would not change the parenting schedule.
3. The custodial parent would have no right to refuse visitation rights or cut back on the visitation schedule, even if child support payments have not been made.

Any non-payment of child support payments would have to be dealt through the court and court orders. Dealing with child support hassles on your own would be very cumbersome and time consuming.

Don’t take any decision which would bring harm to your child.You should always keep in mind that children need both their parents for love and support. Your child would also need the other parent for financial support. For your child, you must maintain a cordial relation with your child’s other parent.

As a parent you should ensure that legal obligations and requirements do not come in the way of your relationship with your child. For the benefit of your child, you should prevent problems from emerging or taking shape. It would be beneficial to keep the best interest of your child in mind always.
