How to file for child support

Going through a divorce is very uneasy. Child support and other related things are much more difficult. This article will help you to in the matter by giving you information about how to file for child support.

You will need to contact your local office of child support enforcement to file for child support. Federal office of child support enforcement comes under the US Department of health and human services. The local agencies may come under health and human services, social services, attorney generals office or the department of revenue. This agency will do the following for you.

1. Establish paternity
2. Locate non- custodial parents
3. Establish child support order
4. Modify child support
5. Collect child support payments

The very first step in filing for child support is to establish paternity. This is a difficult task if you are not married to the baby’s father.

If you are not in touch are do not know where the father is, the OCSE will track him down. You will need to provide the information about the other parent’s most recent address. The federal parent locator services will use this information and the one provided by national directory of new hires, state employment security agency and the state directories of new hires.

You will not be charged any fee if you are receiving temporary assistance for needy families or Medicaid. Otherwise, you may have to pay small fees to apply for the services through the office of child enforcement.

You will have to work in coordination with a case worker. This worker will walk you through the process of establishing paternity, obtaining child support order and receiving the actual child support. This process may take time as there are a lot of agencies involved.

Documents required for filing child support

You will need to have some documents while you file for child support. Theses documents will also be necessary in case you want to request for a change, update your information.

1. Valid photo ID like driver’s license
2. Address proof like rent receipt, mortgage statement or a utility bill
3. Birth certificate of the child for whom you are seeking child support
4. Recent contact information regarding current location of the absent parent

2. Social security cards for yourself and your children
3. Wage information that includes recent pay stubs and W-2 forms
4. Payment history or arrears statement
5. Existing support orders that include uniform support petition, notice of determination of controlling order
6. Divorce decree
7. Description of personal/real property
