Changing insurance policies following divorce


The changing scenario in the western world has only made humans more robotic with a heartless attitude towards others. All this is not only affecting our professional life but, influencing our marriage as well. The numbers of divorce cases are peaking and so are the disputes in our marital life. This might be a key reason that why many people choose to be remain single and live in together rather than getting married.

In a divorce, everything is asked for an equal share, be it finances, assets, insurances, pensions, family home, etc. Insurance policies take care of the future and they need to be discussed and looked in a critical way, and they should be changed once the couples are divorced, so to go according to them. Most couples take these policies early in their life, which includes car or auto insurance, home, health and life insurance. However, there are adequate changes made in the insurance policies following a divorce.

Few of the basic pre- divorce insurance types and guidelines are given below

Auto insurances:

  1. Ensure that your policy covers all the aspects in a most cost effective way.
  2. Alert your insurance company to the change with necessary papers and you may remove your ex if needed.
  3. If any one of the spouse is moving to live to a far of place. Then they should convey it to the company.

Home insurance:

  1. Depending upon who is the owner of the house, the owner should change the name in the policy, after divorce.
  2. In case, the house is mortgaged, the insurance company must hold the name of the firm, who holds it and you should make sure to update about your divorce in case, you had a joint policy with your ex.
  3. If you move to a rental property, you may consider taking a renter’s insurance, to take care of your personal items.

Health insurance:

  1. The parent to whom the custody of the child is given, his or her insurance is considered primary and you may add your children to the cover.
  2. Check should be made, in case the ex spouse have not duplicated the coverage.

Life insurance:

  1. It is one of the most crucial coverage one seeks, so adjust the beneficiaries on the policies to reflect the changes you both want after divorce is final.
  2. If you are a single parent and you have a life cover you may name a trust or a family member, so in any condition the other spouse cannot take advantage of the financial security after death.

Changing insurance policies following divorce differs from person to person and their policy type. Changes are made under the legal guidance, respective company’s executive and two of the divorced parties.
